Far West Awards Program

The Far West Ski Association (FWSA) is by far the largest ski association, and not surprisingly, has a sophisticated and far reaching recognition program. The earliest awards documented, started over 40 years ago in 1966, were formalized into the format that continues today. The Far West Ski Association awards are highly revered by ski pioneers,  long term volunteers, and industry employees. 

The program enjoys recognition by the Western America Ski Sport Museum located at Boreal Ridge off the I-80 at Donner Summit. The museum maintains a display of all past award recipients near the front entrance and archives the citations written for all nominees.

Far West recognition awards are divided into the following categories:

Service by Ski Volunteers

Hans Georg Award – Awarded to the individual who has contributed significant achievements to skiing, not necessarily organized skiing. This award is for long-term contribution.
Elizabeth " Schatzi" Wood Award –Awarded to the Far West woman who has, through efforts in ski club, council, region, national or international activities, made a decisive contribution to skiing during either the past year or in a prior year.
J. Stanley Mullin Award – Awarded to the Far West man who has, through efforts in ski club, council, region, national or international activities, made a decisive contribution to skiing during either the past year or in a prior year.
Jimmie Heuga Award – This award is given in honor of Jimmie Heuga, whose determination overcame a diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis to provide for the physically challenged. It is awarded to an individual who has demonstrated courage and skill in three arenas: the ski slope, the human body and the courageous heart.
Jordan-Reily Award – This award will recognize a one or two year activity and achievement in the Association’s Public Affairs Program (skier safety, area development, liability protections, governmental affairs, taxation, transportation) and other functions added by the Board of Directors.
Presidents Award Awarded to the individual who the President of FWSA feels has done the most to advance the immediate goals of the Association during the previous year.
Snowsports Builder Award – Awarded to the individual or team that made a real difference in snowsports by virtue of their contributions, whether it be in industry, travel, communications, research, safety — the scope is unlimited.

Industry Contributions to Far West

Certificate of Long Term Participation
Tommi Tyndall Award – Presented to the ski area or ski area operator who has made a distinguished contribution to skiing in the past year or in prior years.
Bill Mackey Award – Awarded for outstanding service to the skiing public by a ski industry or ski area employee.
Bill Berry Award – This award is for outstanding Print Coverage of Skiing. This award is given for outstanding service to skiing and is presented to writers for a featured article or hard news.
Warren Miller Award – This award is for outstanding Multi-Media Coverage of Skiing. This award is given for outstanding service to skiing by cinematographers, photographers, radio or television broadcasters. [Formerly the Bill Berry Modern Media Award]

Club and Council Achievements

FWSA Council's Man & Woman of the Year – The FWSA Council Man and Woman of the Year are chosen by their peers based on their contributions to Clubs, Council, Race League, FWSA and nationally.
Tollakson Award – The Tollakson Award is presented to an outstanding club based on an evaluation of their structure, organization, skiing, sports, social events, and giving to the community.
Wentworth Award – The Wentworth Award is given to the club whose newsletters are judged best based on layout, content, and club size.
Outstanding Web Site – The Outstanding Web Site Award is given to the club whose web site is judged best based on layout, content, usefulness, navigation, and club size.

Intramural Awards

Terry Smith Award – Awarded for outstanding individual contribution to intramural skiing.
Joe Ross Memorial Race Award – Awarded at the annual ski week to the club with the most total points for slalom and giant slalom.
Ski Week Racer Award - Awarded to Council that garners the most race points at FWSA Ski Week.
Ski Week Racer of the Week Award.
Sportsfest – Sportsfest, held annually in the fall, consisted of club competitions in softball, volleyball, tennis, and later golf. Sportsfest was last held in 2000.

Public Affairs Awards

Safety – The Safety Award is for the person within FWSA who does the most to promote safe skiing and safety programs. Award sponsored by Aspen Skiing Company.
History – The Western Ski Heritage Program recognizes the best effort to find, preserve, document and share the history of skiing in the West. Award sponsored by Steamboat.
Charity – The Charity Award is new in 2007 and is given to the club or council how has made a significant charitable contribution.
Club / Council History – The Club / Council History Award is new in 2008 and is given to the club or council that does the most to collect and present their history.
