Machu Picchu, Peru—

Nothing prepared us for Peru and words can not describe the grandeur. We left Portillo (9,300 feet) at 4 AM and arrived in Cusco (11,500 feet) by 2 PM. We transferred to Urubamba (9,600 feet) in the Sacred Valley. We were well prepared for the high altitude. We stayed at the Hotel Libertador Tambo del Inka in Urubamba where the meals were outstanding and best of all we were only a few steps from the Train Station.

Sunday morning we left by train at 6 AM for Aguas Calientes and Machu Picchu. This was the best way to get there as we arrived by 9 AM— two hours before most of the other tourists. First up was a hike to the Sun Gate where we were treated to a fabulous view of the river and Machu Picchu. With our guide we managed to experience the entire Citadel.

We ended the tour with a fabulous meal at the Sanctuary where they served the best cheviche ever. We were pretty tired when we finally got back to our hotel at 7 PM— just in time for more shopping and dinner.
